CORDRY SPILLWAY UPDATE

Work continues on the Cordry Lake Spillway.  A large flat area southeast of the spillway which previously was a "wet" area has had drainage installed and was addressed with rip rap.  The approach area west of the spillway is being graded and prepared for a roadway for trucks and material can be delivered to the site.  Center Lake Road remains open.

WORK BEGUN ON CORDRY SPILLWAY

Equipment arrived today to the Cordry Spillway area.  Some area on the backside was cleared for "work room" on the backside of the spillway.  The actual project is to replace the metal spillway tube that was installed back in the 1960's.  It has rusted through allowing water run-off to undermine the area underneath the tube and cement on the spillway.

THE EDINBURGH DAM

If you trave the State Road 252 through Edinburgh, you've probably seen the dam on Blue River.  The Thompson Mill Dam faild in 2023.  Demolition has begun this past week.  The dam was built to furnish water for the Thompson Mill water wheel.  The dam was later given to the town of Edinburgh and it supplied some electricity to the town.  "Low Head" dams around the state and country are being removed due to safety issues.

Keep your cars in a safe place.

FALL COLORS

It's already begun!!!   Some trees are already showing color.  This may be due to the extremely dry period we've been having lately.  This particular tree is always one of the first to show color.

CORDRY SPILLWAY REPAIRS

A meeting on Monday evening made way for a "bond issue" for $3,200,000 for the Cordry Spillway Repair.  Hopefully the actual costs will be less.  The plan for billing property owners is not in place yet and will be decided by the board at a later time.  All Cordry Lake property owners have been given notice to remove boats by September 9th, 2024 when actual lowering of the lake by 2 feet may begin.  Finish time for the repairs is 180 days.    The real issue is the metal corrugated spillway pipe has rusted through allowing water to erode underneath.  The repairs will also include work on the boat launch ramp.

HOME TOUR SUCCESS

The Annual Lake Homes Home Tour sponsored by the Cordry Sweetwater Lot Owners Association was a huge success!  The weatherman cooperated providing sunny skies for the event.  The guest were pleased with the homes and the sponsors provided plenty of helpers and dock handlers. Special thanks to the property owners who opened up their homes and the volunteer pontoon owners who piloted all around beautiful Sweetwater Lake. The Maulden Pontoon Group receive special mention for "best spirit/decorations!"

Looking forward to next year at Cordry Lake.

OX ROAST FIREWORKS COMBINED

This year's Ox Roast has been moved to Saturday, June 6th in combination with the annual fireworks show on Sweetwater Lake.  The event begins around noon at the Beach on Sweetwater and continues into the night with the fireworks show.  It should be a busy day for all!  Food trucks, a band, and vendor booths should be of interest to all.

LAKE ALIVE

Activity on the lakes has been fairly low key until Saturday, May 25th.  The Lakes came alive!  The weather was warm, it was sunny and it was time to get on the lakes and have fun!  Now Sunday, May 26th was a different story!

OX ROAST DATE

The annual Cordry Sweetwater Ox Roast has been historically held on Labor Day weekend.  A new date and place is in place for this year.......JULY 6th,  2024  at Sweetwater Beach.  Mark your calendars.

B C SCHOOLS WIN!

Being a retired teacher, I was very sympathetic to the recent Brown County Schools Referendum that wat voted on in the May 7th election this week.  The very good news is that the R

eferendum passed and the BC Schools will receive their badly needed funds.

NINEVEH ROAD CLEAN UP

Saturday April 20th brought out the volunteers for the annual  Nineveh Road Clean-Up.  Organized for the past number of years by Carrie Vavul,  the result is clean edges along the front entrance to Cordry Sweetwater Lakes.  We usually stop at the north Brown County line but.....one group got carried away and continued into Johnson County to the Dollar General Store!

LIGHTED FLAGS!

Last week, Angela VonHoven gathered some volunteers together to assemble new flag poles for both Cordry and Sweetwater Lakes.   The assembly included putting the poles together, attaching the flags, and attaching solar powered lights!  (YES LIGHTS!)    The Conservancy workers will be installing the flags in the near future.  Much appreciation to Angela for managing this project for the past few years.

BEAUTIFUL REDBUDS

The Redbuds are in full bloom making the coming Eclipse weekend even more exciting!

THE ECLIPSE

There's been lots of talk about the coming total eclipse on April 8th, 2024.  Neighboring communities are planning events over the entire weekend of April 6th-8th.  Area hotels are all booked.  Parking in school parking lots is up for dibs.  Everyone is being warned/cautioned about the influx of people and traffic issues.  The local law enforcement are taxed and admit the projected crowds are overwhelming!  Our area does not have any planned activities but.....locals are getting their boats launched and ready for the afternoon event.  Even the lakes may be crowded!   Lets hope for a clear sky on April 8th!   Stay tuned!

WAKE BOATS AND WAKE SURFING

Much time and discussion at the March 19th, CSCD Meeting was devoted to Wake Boats and Wake Surfing.  No solid decision was made although the Board did pass a motion for a 60 day moratorium on any new "boats designed to create large wakes"  to be stickered.  This does not apply to boats that are currently stickered with the district.  There was also discussion about further testing, weight limits, and length measurements.

GREAT NORTHERN!

Just look what Mark Rasdall caught today!  Mark's catch was at the northern end of Sweetwater where he lives.   It rare but not unusual for someone to hook onto one of these monsters.  Back in history, they were stocked in both Cordry and Sweetwater.  It's my understanding that they do not reproduce in our lakes.  Other activity on both lakes involved boating and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather.

SURPRISE SNOW!

Friday afternoon brought the most significant snow of the winter season.  Perhaps 3-4 inches of snow were dumped in a short amount of time causing many "slide offs" and wrecks around central Indiana.
