SWEETWATER SWANS UPDATE

It's been nearly a year. I took Iris into the Trafalagr Vet for her 100,000 mile check-up and asked David Bricker of Briarcrest Animal Hospital how the swans were doing. Well...he had to relocate them to a friend in northern Indiana. Dr. Brickler had a coyote problem and was afraid that the coyotes would get the swans. According to Dr. Brickler, the swans are thriving in their northern Indiana habitat.

NATURE TRAILS OPEN

After being closed for weekends during October, November, and December, the nature trails are officially open. The deer reduction program is complete for 2011. 21 deer were harvested during this year's program.

THE BEAVER RETURN!

For at last 10 years, beaver have paid a visit to the north end of Sweetwater Lake and taken up residence in the same beaver den, usually in the fall. Fresh mud and a new layer of sticks indicate that they have returned again to this same site. In addition, the beaver have built a small dam further north at the very end of the lake.

THANKSGIVING WAKEBOARDERS

Yes, there were wakeboarders and tubers on Sweetwater on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. I was told it is "tradition" at this particular Hummingbird Drive residence. The great weather made for lots of walkers, runners, and boats on the lakes.

BOAT LENGTH UPDATE

The CSCD recently "fine tuned" the boat length rule. In addition to the earlier revisions, an additional paragraph was added. "Any Speed Boat with a title, certificate of origin, or manufacturer's specifications with a length listed greater than 20 feet, one-half inch shall not be eligible to be measured for a permit to boat on Cordry Sweetwater Lakes."

GLAMOROUS JOB

Working for the Cordry Sweetwater Conservancy District is NOT a glamorous job! Pictured are the employees fixing a water leak at a meter near a residence.....a frequent occurance. Later the workers fished a dead deer out of Sweetwater on Grizzly Drive.

HALLOWEEN FUN

Super weather conditions made the Haunted Hayride at Sweetwater Beach a great success. Approximately 750 brave souls enjoyed the hayrides. Halloween evening was another positive weather event. Approximately 150 children enjoyed the trick or treat hayrides with their parents.

NATURE TRAILS

Walked the Nature Trails today in the rain. Many thanks to the CSCD workers who removed a large trash pile at the entrance to the trails. They also did some extra mowing in the entrance area making it look more user friendly and the removal of an old junker boat just inside the entrance to the trails really makes a big improvement. Thanks guys. The Nature Trails are in the best condition that I've seen for several years. The Nature Trails will be closed weekends through October and November for the deer reduction program and the Haunted Trail.

DEDICATION

I was walking on the nature trails last night when the local Cordry Sweetwater Fire Department vehicles arrived at the Sweetwater launch ramp. It was 60 degrees and spitting rain but that didn't stop their scheduled water rescue drill. They launched their inflatable and went off for practice in the miserable weather.

NATURE TRAILS

Had a friend stop in today who complimented the Nature Trails "upgrades." I had to go see for myself! Two different Eagle Scout projects have improved the trails. The most recent completed in July of 2011 honors Buzz Settles who passed approximately 1 year ago. Eagle Scout Austin Settles orchestrated the improvements at the entrance to the trails. Really looks attractive. Thanks Austin.

Don't just sit there! We need some volunteers for the kitchen on Ox Roast Day. (Sat. Sept 3rd) Just a 3 hour shift will help! Grab a neighbor or a friend. HELP! Call Brenda @ 317-933-2172.

NINEVEH POST OFFICE

Our local Nineveh Post Office is scheduled to change to a "minimal service" facility on Monday, August 29th. The front desk, lobby, and post office boxes will remain but the large "sorting room" will be closed in this "owned" building. The sorting room room will be moved to the Edinburg Post Office and our carriers will operate out of the Edinburg "leased" building. The Post Office states that the customers will not realize any changes in service. As for the familiar faces of Taffy and Dee....that is to be determined.

PARK MASTER PLAN

At last week's CSCD meeting, the board agreed to spend a budgeted $18,000 toward park improvements. The Cordry Sweetwater Lot Owners paid a professional to draw up a "master plan" for the area located by the fire department. There is a walking track and shelter house at that site presently. Future plans for future years include relocating the basketball and baseball area, horseshoe courts, and other items. Now that a master plan is in place, gifts, grants, and other sources of philanthropy can be targeted for this project.

CSLOA SOCIAL HOUR REPEAT

The Cordry Sweetwater Lot Owner's Association (CSLOA) has been promoting several "social hour" (meet your neighbors) events this summer. They have been very well attended and enjoyed by all. The next scheduled event is Thursday, July 28th beginning at 5:30 PM in the clubhouse. (bring an appetizer and drink of your choice)
It is not necessary to stay for the CSLOA meeting but.......the board is in the planning stages for the annual OX Roast and they need volunteers. Just a few hours on that Saturday means so much to the success of the event. I need a couple of "drivers" for an hour or two each to drive the shuttle.....it's a fun job.

FINAL BOAT LENGTH RULE

The CSCD voted on the revised boat length rule on June 21st. The new boat length rule allows speed boats to 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches and also requires boats to be physically measured. This revision is the result of a study by a boat length committee started in November 2010. Boat manufacturers have altered their construction methods and designs in recent years allowing for large molded swim boards at the stern of boats affecting overall length which disqualifies many boats from our lakes. The new rule allows for both I-O and inboard boats in the 19'-20' range which were already allowed by the previous enforcement policy using boat titles.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS

A second social hour "MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS" is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd beginning at 5:30 PM in the clubhouse. Bring your own beverage and an appetizer to share. (coffee and dessert provided) Let's make the second one as successful as the first! (Questions?...call Dani @ 878-4526)

BOAT LENGTH DECISION COMING

It was a "full house at the June 14th security commission meeting. Some board members wanted another "public meeting" offering freeholders the opportunity to voice their opinions concerning a possible change in the 19' runabout length limit on Cordry and Sweetwater Lakes. Numerous persons gave their thoughts about the potential change. Although no official "show of hands" was held, it was a clear majority in favor of the change. Board member Quinn Heatherington stated that he would make a "motion" at next week's CSCD meeting in favor of increasing the length limit and method of enforement.

FOOD AND MUSIC

This weekend offers food and music at Cordry Sweetwater Lakes! The fire department is operating a fish fry (and other good food) at the CSLOA Clubhouse on Saturday until 7:00 PM. The CSLOA is sponsoring a live concert at the Sweetwater Beach Shelter beginning at 8:00 PM.
